(OTTAWA, ON) Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking reacted after the Conservatives tabled their budget in Ottawa today.
“I’m disappointed that many of the issues we identified to the Minister were not addressed today in this budget.” Eyking said “It seems as if our worst fears have come true regarding changes to the OAS and EI; this is going to have a devastating effect on many Cape Breton seniors and workers. We are not only losing good government jobs in this budget, we will lose services to many Cape Bretoners. In addition, the CBRM and Victoria County are going to be hit because there is a lack of adequate infrastructure dollars in this budget; 150 million for the whole country is a joke.” Eyking added. “The provinces are going to have additional costs because of the Conservative’s agenda. How are they going to maintain proper services like health, education and highways. Cuts to Atlantic Canada that are going to hurt us here are as follows: DFO cut 79 million dollars a year; ACOA cut 18 million a year; Food Safety cut 56 million a year. Where is the money needed for aboriginal and low income housing?” Eyking said.
“We all understand some belt tightening and efficiencies must take place, we offered this government ways that this could be done, however it’s apparent, they had their own agenda and this is going to hurt Cape Breton.” said Eyking
